Across all of our devices – desktops and laptops especially – Protection from Cyber-Criminals is paramount along with Other Types– focus points for this Issue.
I will speak of SECURITY, PASSWORDS and BACKUPS – all 3 of these are important parts of device protection which helps enable our online businesses!!
Security – I will refer you to a recent Audio Episode from my Podcast “Path Forged with Tech” which provides my recommends for a full software suite. This Episode is from 9-18-25 “Beyond Antivirus” - check it out to learn more on this topic!!!
Passwords – This seems to be something that businesses embrace with concern or approach it carelessly.
I recommend you Embrace it as a business function to both Setup AND Maintain!!
Many just choose one password they use everywhere and never change it unless forced to by a service!!
A very dangerous practice because of cyber-criminals watching for this and getting your accounts hacked, data stolen!!
Those who embrace this will frequently use an online service such as “Password Managers or Vaults”. I don't think any of them offer a Free account but they are very reasonably priced especially with the multitude of features
Many of these will not only store your chosen Login Credentials (username\email + password) but will also suggest a secure level password string for you AND one that is unique from all the others you have in your account!!
If you use one of these (examples are Nordpass.com, 1Password.com) it's recommended that you go all out and import everything you have for Logins; to really maximize its use and get those unique auto-generated passwords.
But I like a different route, a roll-my-own method:
The other passwords advice is maintenance – say every 3 to 6 months change (even just 1 character) each accounts password AND update your documentation with it!!!
Also, it's recommended to minimize using same password.
I also maintain a listing of newest to oldest top-down of all current\previous-use passwords per account!!
Backups – This topic can come in two forms: data and disk\hard-drive.
This is a protection point that should not be ignored especially for businesses!!
After all, what do you do if your device crashes or ditto for an external drive??
If you have a reliable backup scheme established with accessible data – its easy to do the restores as needed!!
Data backup is the most common type especially since Microsoft operating systems now have such strict ties of your installed device\hard drive to its software.
It use to be you could create a hard drive\operating system backup and then restore it to any number of computers with ease....
So lets focus on Data backups.
Many will use popular cloud services (either via your web browser or an installed app) like Dropbox or Google Drive. These are powerful solutions since you not only get Backups but also Sync across all devices that access that account!!
I personally use cloud services for business related functions – especially files sharing; but not for my Backups solution.
Instead I use a software package called “AOMEI Backupper Professional”.
Why, because I want full, custom configuration Backups Management of multiple types. This is an extremely powerful software – allowing for multiple types of Upload To (Destination) location types – I personally use an attached high capacity external USB drive as my Destination.
Here are two of the great features:
They are currently running an 80% discount during the Halloween season....
